Leather Jerkin
(2014-07-19)
Sizes on the latest production are slightly large. Based on true chest measurements, rather than chest + service dress/battle dress jacket, the jerkin provides enough room and bulk that I cannot wear it buttoned with web equipment over the top. I wrap it about myself as a robe and then put my web equipment over the top. This is a satisfactory solution and the jerkin will be used as designed in winter months with thicker undergarments. The buttons are appropriate for WWII Canadian use, can't comment on their suitability for other eras, perhaps not the First World War. In such case, wearing it as I must with the Service Dress and Pattern 1908 web, it is perfectly satisfactory.
Leather quality is good. Wool liner very good. Multiple panel construction on my example, others from same vendor (WPG) have four-panel construction. Both instances are accurate for both World Wars.
I've wanted a jerkin like this since I first saw one in a history book in the elementary school library. I look forward to using it in the woods as a work garment also, where I suspect it'll be a perfect medium weight cold weather solution that leaves the arms free and has good ventilation.
